Letter Matching Activity: A Fun Fishing Game for Preschoolers

Looking for a fun and engaging letter matching activity for your preschooler?

If your little learner loves pretend play, this fishing-themed game is the perfect way to practice matching uppercase and lowercase letters while having fun! Instead of sitting down with flashcards or worksheets, your child can climb into their “boat,” cast their fishing line, and catch letters as they learn.

This simple letter matching activity combines movement, imagination, and early literacy skills, making it a preschool favorite.

Why Try a Letter Matching Activity?

Before children learn to read, they need plenty of opportunities to recognize and identify letters. A hands-on letter matching activity helps children understand that uppercase and lowercase letters belong together and represent the same letter.

Through play, children can strengthen:

  • Letter recognition
  • Alphabet knowledge
  • Pre-reading skills
  • Fine motor skills
  • Attention and focus

Best of all, kids are often having so much fun that they don’t even realize they’re learning!

How to Set Up This Letter Matching Activity

Supplies Needed

  • Letter Matching Fish printable
  • Scissors
  • Laundry basket
  • Toy fishing pole (or a stick and string)
  • Open floor space

Directions

  1. Print and cut out the fish.
  2. Scatter the fish around the floor.
  3. Place your child inside a laundry basket and let them pretend it is a fishing boat.
  4. Give them a toy fishing pole or create one using a stick and a piece of string.
  5. Have them “catch” a fish by touching it with the end of the string.
  6. Once they catch a fish, challenge them to find the matching uppercase or lowercase letter fish.

Continue until all the letter pairs have been matched.

This playful letter matching activity is a wonderful way to reinforce alphabet knowledge while encouraging imaginative play.

Ways to Extend the Learning

One of my favorite things about this letter matching activity is how easy it is to adapt.

Practice Letter Sounds

After matching the letters, ask your child:

“What sound does this letter make?”

This helps connect letter recognition with phonics skills.

Add Movement

Have your child row their laundry basket boat to a new fishing spot before catching another fish.

Race the Clock

Set a timer and see how many letter matches your child can make before time runs out.

Play Together

Take turns catching fish and finding matches. Preschoolers love when learning feels like a game the whole family can enjoy.

What Your Child Is Learning

While your preschooler is busy fishing, they’re also developing important foundational skills.

This letter matching activity helps children practice:

  • Uppercase and lowercase letter matching
  • Letter recognition
  • Visual discrimination
  • Fine motor coordination
  • Problem-solving skills
  • Concentration and focus

These early literacy skills help build a strong foundation for future reading success.
