Even if you are new to sensory bins, this quick guide will have you embracing holistic learning in no time. Read on for step by step instructions and tips on setting up your very own Easter sensory bin for toddlers complete with colored rice, plastic easter eggs and plenty of surprises for your little one!
Making the Colored Rice
The first step in creating this sensory bin is making the colored rice. For this project, you can use whatever colors you want—but I chose green, purple, yellow, blue, and pink because they’re classic Easter shades. To create the colored rice simply add 1 cup of white rice per color, each color in its own baggie and place each cup of rice into plastic resealable baggies. You can double this recipe but make sure to add each color to its own baggie. Then add 1/2 teaspoon of white vinegar and several drops of liquid or gel food coloring to each baggie (you can add more or less depending on how vivid you want your colors). Stir until fully combined then let dry overnight on a baking sheet or parchment paper before using them in the bin.
How to Assemble Your Easter Egg Sensory Bin
Fill an empty container with your dyed rice, you can use as many colors as you want! You may need to tilt the bin to one side to make sure all the colors stay together. Then add your easter eggs on top of the rice. It’s that easy!! Woo Hoo!
Engaging Your Toddlers
Now comes the fun part! Let your child match up the colors of the rice with the empty Easter eggs then have them scoop out handfuls of colored rice using scoops or their hands and fill up their eggs. They can also shake their closed eggs around like a musical instrument or just enjoy scooping and matching different colors together. Even if all the colors get mixed together — it still looks beautiful with so many different hues swirling around inside!

Supplies
- Large resealable plastic bag
- 1 cup of uncooked white rice
- 1/2 tsp of white vinegar
- Food coloring – Can use gel or liquid
- Baking sheet or any container with a large flat bottom (optional)
- Parchment Paper – Optional

Directions

- Add Vinegar and desired amount of food coloring. It should only take a few drops.
- Reseal bag, then mix and massage colors into rice. Add a few more drops of food coloring until desired color is reached.
- Cover baking sheet with parchment paper. Or place parchment paper directly on counter top if you don’t have a baking sheet or pan.
- Spread out the colored rice in a single layer on parchment paper as thin as possible.
- As the rice dries, separate the clumps using a spoon or utensil. Or if using your fingers, wear gloves, if the dyes are still a little damp they will stain your fingers.
- Repeat the process to make as many colors as you like but drying separately.
- Rice can be stored in an airtight container or resealable plastic baggie.
Note: Make sure rice is dried completely before playing or storing because it could stain your childs fingers or clump together.
